The New Zealand Bible Society is giving away 85,000 copies of ‘The Seriously Suprising Story’ an Easter story retold for children by English poet Dai Woolridge and illustrations by Emma Skerratt.

“The Seriously Surprising Story is a beautifully fresh way of sharing the Easter message,” said Bishop Eleanor, who appraised the newly released book while reading it to her son Zac.

“The narrative weaves together the big saving story of our God with the joy of a close friendship with Jesus  – and does so with light and beauty,” said Bishop Eleanor.

The illustrations give children so much to explore and are a wonderful prompt for conversations together.”

The Seriously Surprising Story draws children into the biblical story of Easter as they walk in the footsteps of Jesus’ followers on the road to Emmaus. Biblical references are dotted through the illustrations for families to follow as the story moves along.

When they hear how the disciples encountered a stranger on the road, and talked to him about events in Jersusalem, the children are as surprised as the disciples were to learn that the stranger was Jesus himself.

Acclaimed New Zealand children’s author Joy Cowley reported she found The Seriously Surprising Story a good read.

“The positive message with the rhythmic text and lively illustrations, make it a perfect book for young children. It’s warm, it’s happy, it’s the Good News,” Joy said.

The Seriously Surprising Story is available online at www.surprisingstory.nz where you can also find a poster and an animated version of the book.

Individuals can order up to 5 free copies of the booklet at time, while churches can place bulk orders of up to 200 copies for their Easter activities. Some Salvation Army Family Stores also stock copies of The Seriously Surprising Story.
