Its reinstatement represents not only the restoration of a structure, but also the renewal of community identity and hope following the 2011 earthquakes." said the Latter Day Saints Church in a press release.Elder Peter F. Meurs, Pacific Area President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said the contribution is offered in a spirit of goodwill and unity.“We recognise the deep significance of Christ Church Cathedral to the people of Christchurch and to many across New Zealand,” he said.“As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe in building strong communities and extending friendship across faiths. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the restoration of this important place of worship and heritage in the city of Christchurch.”This is not the first time Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd (CCRL) has received interfaith support. In 2023, the project received a significant gift from the New Zealand Buddhist community.CCRL Chair Steve Wakefield said, “We are immensely grateful for this support. When Christ Church Cathedral reopens, it will welcome people of all faiths and none.”The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints media release on the occasion of the donation said the Church seeks to build understanding, promote peace, and serve communities in ways that reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ—particularly the call to love God and to love one’s neighbour. The Latter Day Saints' ChurcH supported the Cathedral as part of its work with community, civic and faith leaders throughout the Pacific to foster cooperation, encourage service, and promote mutual respect among people of all beliefs."This contribution forms part of broader efforts to assist with community resilience and recovery, while supporting projects that bring people together and strengthen the social fabric of the city of Christchurch and the nation." said LDS Elder Peter Muirs.
