Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally has published a new book of reflections on discipleship and unity as her 2026 Lenten guide. Designed for personal or small group reflection, the compilation of 26 Anglican writers' personal stories and thoughts on the theme is titled: ‘Dancing to the Heartbeat of God’.
Communion leaders including Archbishop Sarah Mullally, Secretary General Bishop Anthony Poggo, Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, Communion Dep. Secretary General Bishop Jo Bailey Wells, and Anglican Consultative Council Chair Canon Maggie Swinson all contribute to the volume, along with Archbishops and Primates from Australia, Southern Africa, South America, Canada, Central America, Japan, Myanmar and the Church of North India.
Anglican Alliance Chair and Archbishop of Central Africa also adds his voice, as does Primate of Brazil, Archbishop Marinez Bassotto and diocesan bishops serving in Kenya, Tanzania and an Indigenous Suffragan Bishop of the Arctic, Bishop Annie Ittoshat.
Two Aotearoa New Zealand bishops, Archbishop Justin Duckworth and Bishop Anashuya Fletcher contribute chapters that capture their reflections on the power of friendship and community to uplift disciples on their journeys and reconcile strongly-held differing viewpoints.
Archbishop Justin Duckworth's chapter shares insights from his 'prophetic friendship' with a Pentecostal pastor ministering nearby his church in the Whanganui suburbs. Archbishop Justin tells the story of friendship in Christ that triumphs over common divisions – reflecting on the power of relationship and Christian generosity to override even the most strongly opposed political and theological beliefs.
Assistant Bishop of Wellington Anashuya Fletcher contributes a chapter entitled 'A compelling community' that tells the transformational story of a woman that joined her church through the sudden conversion of a family member. Anashuya delights in her friend's growing confidence in faith and community life and challenges readers to consider the impact of God's presence becoming known in others' lives.
Published by SPCK, the book can be purchased online for NZ $38.95 (or $45.00 inclu. P&P in New Zealand) through Whitcoulls. If you're buying a copy in time for next Lent, the 2026 ABC Lenten book ships to addresses in New Zealand from May 2026 through Fishpond for NZ $25.40.
