Taonga News  |  14 Feb 2014

Bishop John Charles Vockler died on February 6, aged 89.

Formerly Brother John Charles of the Society of St Francis, he was ordained deacon and priest in Newcastle. In 1959, at age 35, he was ordained co-adjutor Bishop of Adelaide.

He was then a bishop in Polynesia from 1962-69 when he resigned to join SSF, initially in the European Province.

He transferred to the (then) Pacific Province in 1975 and was guardian of the Brookfield friary.

Elected minister provincial in 1976, he resigned as guardian in 1977 and was part of the initial group in the Islington (Newcastle) friary from 1978-81.

He transferred to the US, and left SSF in 1990 to join a breakaway Anglican group.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, February 19, in the chapel of St Mary's Roman Catholic School, 2 Grant Street, Maitland.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
