Apartheid fighter praised

Helen Suzman, for many years a lone liberal crusader against apartheid in South Africa's parliament, and who died on New Year's Day aged 91, has been praised by religious leaders. "She was a true heroine who contributed to our country's peaceful transition when many predicted a racial bloodbath," said Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Tutu. "South Africa is poorer without her. We owe her an immense debt."

 

US atheists oppose prayer

Supporters of a strict interpretation of the separation of Church and State in the United States have filed a lawsuit seeking an end of the use of the term "so help me God" during President-elect Barack Obama's 20 January inaugural ceremony. The lawsuit, initiated by groups of U.S. atheists and humanists, also wants an end to the practice of prayer and invocations at public events.

 

Wales elects ex-chaplain

Gregory Cameron, former chaplain to Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, has been chosen as the Bishop of St Asaph. The bishop-elect, who grew up in Llangybi, Monmouthshire, is deputy secretary-general of the 80 million-member Communion. His appointment means two thirds of Wales’ Anglican bishops have now been in place for less than a year.
