The Anglican church hall in the quake-damaged community of Heathcote has been transformed into a local pub.
Many buildings in the area, including the historic tavern, library and shops, were damaged in the September and February quakes.
That prompted local people to use one of the few amenities left standing.
The Vicar of Heathcote-Mt Pleasant, Rev Mary Giles, says the BYO pub has been fantastic for the community.
She says although it might seem strange to have a pub in a church, it's important for people to have somewhere to socialise and support each other.
