Through Grit to Glory

Through Grit to Glory: A Daily Companion for Lent, Holy Week and Easter, by Craufurd Murray.

This new Lent book by a well-published writer on spirituality is perfect for individual reading or for a study group. It offers “a daily bite to chew on through the season of Lent”.

The short and easy-to-read reflections for the first five weeks of Lent focus on the five aspects of the Anglican Consultative Council’s definition of mission. In Holy Week attention turns to the Seven Last Words from the Cross.

The Bishop of Christchurch, the Rt Rev Victoria Matthews, writes in the Foreword:

“We too often think of Lent as a time of going without this or that, when in fact it is an opportunity to clear our vision. But to do that well, we need to have a sense of the big picture, and this is where this book proves to be a real help…

“Together these meditations invite us to ponder the saving acts of Jesus Christ and our response to the gift of salvation.

“May this Lent be a season when you reflect on what God has given us in the person of Jesus Christ, and how your own Christian faith is evidenced in daily life-giving discipleship.”

The daily readings are varied, unaffected, accessible, thought-provoking and entertaining. They contain stories, items from the news, biblical interpretation, personal anecdotes, and spiritual insights. They range from godwits to cricket matches, the Dambusters to megalithic tombs, tightrope walking to rolling eggs, travelling in lifts to going down a coalmine.

After the publication in 2008 of “A Handful of Light” (the Advent and Christmas companion), of which Craufurd was a co-editor, it was suggested that he write some reflections for Lent.

Retirement from parish life created the ideal opportunity and the project gained momentum, becoming a rewarding experience.

The book has been very well received, and has proved a popular resource for many individuals and parishes across the country.

On the cover there is a striking painting by John Badcock of the crucifixion.

The book is dedicated to all school chaplains and religious education teachers.

The retail cost is around $12 to $15 (Wholesale supplies can be obtained from Craufurd).
