The Order of St John in Fiji celebrated its diamond jubilee at the weekend with a service at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Suva.

The service, led by the order’s prelate, the Rev Amy Chambers, celebrated the care and hospitality that St John has shown to those in need in Fiji for 75 years.

The diocese saw the service as the chance to extend hospitality to the order as well as to the President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who read the Gospel.

Archbishop Winston Halapua took part in the service from a seat next to the altar because he is on crutches with a broken leg from a recent fall.

The Archbishop acknowledged the Fiji Police for coming to his rescue when he fell, and said the Order of St John also came to those in need.

He thanked the order for its work in Fiji, minute by minute for 75 years.

In his sermon Archbishop Winston spoke of how God was present in the work of St John – no matter how simple or difficult the work.

Members of the order reached out to others intentionally and so met God through their neighbour, Archbishop Winston said.

Young people of the diocese led some of the music in the service and danced to introduce the gospel.

Children from St Christopher’s Home and a choir also shared in the music.

St John members at the service rededicated themselves to the work of the order in Fiji.
