The Ven Dr Trevor James, Archdeacon of Waitotara and Vicar of St Mary’s Hawera, has been appointed Dean of the Cathedral Church of St Paul, Dunedin.

He will be installed as the 12th Dean of Dunedin on March 15.

He replaces the Very Rev David Rice, who finished at St Paul's after six years in the role in May and became the youngest bishop in the country when he was ordained Bishop of Waiapu in June.

Announcing the appointment today, Bishop Philip Richardson (Taranaki) said he and Archbishop David Moxon were “very sad to lose both Trevor and Christine after nearly 10 years of oversight and support of five South Taranaki parishes.

“Trevor has served the Diocese as Canon Theologian, Archdeacon of Waitotara and as a member of standing committee. Christine’s work both as Ministry Enabler and Community Minister in the South and her highly specialized counseling work will be greatly missed.”

He has more than 30 years' experience in parish ministry and in teaching theology, in New Zealand and internationally. He has a PhD in theology from Kings College in London.

He has taught in universities in New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong and served as a priest in parishes including Hampstead, Murupara, Darwin and Kowloon.

He has also written extensively on New Zealand and Commonwealth literature and English literature of the 17th century.

His passions include crime fiction, fly fishing, cooking and dogs.

Bishop Philip will represent the diocese at the installation.
