The Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand is offering its support and prayers to the community of St Paul’s Cathedral and the people of Melbourne

The Cathedral was one of the Melbourne landmarks that was a target of a thwarted terrorist attack planned for Christmas Day.

Archbishop Philip Richardson of New Zealand has contacted Archbishop Philip Freier the Primate of Australia and Archbishop of Melbourne.

The Dean of Auckland, the Very Rev’d Jo Kelly-Moore, says there is a close relationship with Melbourne Cathedral and Dean Andreas Loewe of Melbourne whom she has contacted today.

“As the people of Melbourne are grateful and relieved that the plan has been thwarted so are we. This Christmas Day we will pray for our colleagues and the city of Melbourne,” says Dean Jo Kelly-Moore.

“We minister in Cathedrals that are preparing to tell the story of the birth of Christ. They are sacred places that seek to tell of peace, hope and reconciliation. It is chilling to imagine how a gathering for such a story could be the target of terrorists,” says Dean Jo Kelly-Moore.

Anglican Cathedrals in New Zealand will be offering prayers for the city of Melbourne and its people as part of Christmas services.
