The Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn has appointed its first female bishop.
Archdeacon Genieve Blackwell will be consecrated in March and will leave the Yass parish to be based in Wagga Wagga.
There she will be rector of Turvey Park and regional bishop.
She will be one of three female bishops in Australia.
Archdeacon Blackwell says part of her new role will include promoting the church.
"A bishop is a keeper of the vision, and part of what I'll be doing is looking towards promoting the mission of the church in the western region of the diocese," she said.
Archdeacon Blackwell says it is exciting that women in ministry are being recognised for their skills.
"It's about women being able to use the gifts God has given them in the ministry of the church and in the service of Christ. It's very affirming," she said.
